Pakistan : Terrorism sponsored state ?

by Bharat on Mar.03, 2009, under Asia

There is a term known as State sponsored terrorism that has been on the UN agenda for a some time and the cause of concern for the countries in the recent times. For those who don’t know the meaning of state sponsored terrorism click here. The US invaded Afghanistan for the same reason only and promised to evade Taliban. But it didn’t happen.

The state of Afghanistan is in mess. The cultivation of Poppy is increasing to record levels after the US attacks and the new government took over. The Americans pledge peace in the region but that is not possible until the Afghan National Army(ANA) becomes capable of defending and protecting its own people. The number of ANA was pegged at 70,000 in 2005 which declined to 66,000 by 2008. The EU nations are already giving up hope and want to remove their armies. The US didn’t have any success after the initial war in maintaining peace. The number of casualty of the NATO forces are increasing every passing day. There is pressure on US also to finish it quickly thanks to the pressure by the people of America and the recession.  The Taliban is winning, they seem more enthusiastic about the war and the NATO forces seem to be losing their patience.

But the topic is what role does Pakistan play in this situation. The Pakistan bows down to pressure from US. They don’t want the funds coming from the states to stop or risk themselves of being called a terrorist state. The people are not happy about the people allowing Americans in the country which makes it even more worse and puts the government in the hot seat.

The Taliban meanwhile have found an safe heaven in the Tribal Areas of Pakistan. The government has already said that they dont have any control over the areas and can do nothing against them. The peace talks have failed numerous times. The Taliban influence has increased in the region and they are butchering everyone or anyone who goes against them. The killing of the reporter of Geo TV is one such example. The present government of Pakistan has permitted the rule of Sharia (administration by the Islamic Sharia law) in SWAT region effective from 16th of February 2009.

The signs are clear. The Taliban is growing in power in Pakistan, a state more powerful than the Afghanistan. A nuclear state with enough power to destroy the complete world. The locals have sympathy with the Taliban’s. They have controlled SWAT and Islamabad is not too far. The peace and the existence of the world is in danger. The US (responsible for the mess) has an President who is more concerned about the economics part of the things rather than the human life. He is saying about increasing force in Afghanistan region but tells nothing how will that make any difference.

The attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore today was a perfect example to show that the government of Pakistan is not able to control the Taliban or its forces or the ISI. The role of ISI cant be ignored in growing influence of the Taliban. So, when a government like the one in Pakistan where people(not majority may be) believe more in Taliban than their government, where ISI is not under state control, the govt. depends on foreign aid, the constant fear of army taking over and military base of foreign country in its land. How can the government even stand on itself leave along the question of sponsoring terrorism. The terrorists on the other hand getting more and more power may soon become more powerful than the government itself. A (nuclear) country unable to protect itself and the US sleeping one wonders what will happen. Is it going to be the first terrorist sponsored state where terrorists rule, well its may be a little exaggerated but it could happen.
